Auxiliary Movement, 2019

Commissioned by the Auckland Festival of Photography Trust, this series investigates the method of psychodrama. Situated in the Crystal Palace Theatre, Auckland, the photographs document actual psychodrama sessions enacted by a group and directed by a qualified psychodrama director.

In each drama, the protagonist invites other members of the group to be auxiliaries in scenes from their life. They are ephemeral, containing elements not possible in life.
Jacob L. Moreno, the founder of psychodrama, saw the development of creativity in life and relationship as the purpose of these spontaneous moments.

“A meeting of two: eye-to-eye, face-to-face.

And when you are near I will tear your eyes out

and place them instead of mine,

and you will tear my eyes out

and will place them instead of yours,

then I will look at you with your eyes

and you will look at me with mine.”

From Invitation to an Encounter by J.L. Moreno

Auxiliary Movement was created in relationship with the Auckland Training Centre for Psychodrama.
