THE ESSENCE ARCHIVE

The Essence Archive is an art collective founded in 2016 by Auckland-based photographers Timothy Mackrell and Yvonne Shaw.
The book Retrograde Motion was their first collective project. It was a finalist in the 2017 NZ Photobook Award.

In 2020 The Essence Archive expanded to become a collective of thirteen artists whose photographic works reflect multiple levels of meaning.

"What has emerged is a new arena within which photography not only reflects upon the real world and the lived experience within it, but also recognises difference, hope and possibility through an imagination that creatively redefines the relation between reality and representation."

TJ Demos, in "Vitamin Ph. New Perspectives in Photography" (2006).
